A Successful Transition of Leadership at Center for Urban Renewal and Education

News

The Beck & Stone team has successfully transitioned out of management at the Center for Urban Renewal and Education after a two-year engagement, including sixteen months with Austin Stone serving as the interim Chief Operating Officer.

Part of our consulting services includes temporarily staffing the C-suite or executive and director-levels. These placements help institutions find or mentor permanent leaders that aligns with the board’s vision while accomplishing short-term milestones.

This is what Austin was tasked with at CURE while working in their new Washington offices, providing guidance and stability for their rapidly evolving organization.

Beck & Stone has worked with CURE for over two years, where we’ve led them in a redesign of their brand and a redefinition of their identity as a scholar-led think tank that does more than talk about inner-city communities, but works with its leaders. (Over 300 pastors are members of CURE’s pastor network to hear, speak, and do in two-way collaboration.)

After the identity work was completed, Beck & Stone helped CURE run a wildly successful fundraising campaign that gives us all the much-needed encouragement that we were doing together was resonating; that Star Parker’s vision for a black-led organization to address the concerns of the community was being seen and invested in.

This embedded partnership with Beck & Stone brought CURE to new heights of awareness and visibility in Washington, seeing growth across their TV, email, and social media channels, the launch of a book, The State of Black America with Encounter Books, a leadership conference attended by over 100 pastors, and raising of over one million dollars in donations. The capstone to the engagement was the successful search and hiring of the permanent Chief Operating Officer, Brett Hagerman, who brings diverse experience in nonprofit foundations and international business to CURE.

“The wins we CURE and Beck & Stone teams earned these past two years makes me confident that Star Parker and now Brett Hagerman together will carry this special organization into the future. This is what Beck & Stone was founded to do: to help build thriving institutions.”
